‘US News & World Report Recognizes Alaskan Middle Schools’ by the Staff at ACSA

Annually U.S News and World Report releases rankings for the best high schools in the country. This past October, the publication released its first rankings of public middle schools in each state, with 62 Alaska middle schools receiving recognition.

Unlike the high school list, there aren’t national rankings for middle school. The rankings for this list are done by state, based on academic performance in math, reading, and language arts state assessments. “I Believe I Can Do Math!” – Fairbanks Summer Math Camp by Mentor Teacher Samantha Wuttig

This June in Fairbanks about 50 middle school students participated in a three week Summer Math Camp. This year’s camp focused on encouraging students to notice and wonder, to see different ways patterns grow, to persevere in solving problems, and to believe in themselves. Community outreach is a key aspect of the Port Graham Middle School, grades 5-8
(multi-grade classroom). Each year we, as a class, choose from a teacher created list of
community out-reach projects. Two years ago (school year 16-17), we formed a collaboration
with the Port Graham Hatchery and ADF&G to participate in the salmon rearing program:
